Unitarian Universalists
This is an unofficial group created for members of the Unitarian Universalist faith. We're a "creedless church" whose member congregations affirm these principles:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  • Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Our religious community draws upon several sources for inspiration:

  • Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;
  • Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;
  • Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;
  • Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;
  • Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit.
  • Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

UU members may consider themselves Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, or pagan, or even atheists. What binds us together is our love of humanity and our respect for others' right to follow the path that brings out the best in them. For more information, check out home page of the Unitarian Universalist Association, the main organizational body.

There are few rules in this forum, but treating others with respect is one of them. Click here or here if you need that spelled out. Please try to keep this work safe and pretty much all-ages: If you must use profanity stronger than "damn," please us an LJ-cut. No posting nude photos of yourself or other folks. Common sense should be your guide, so the moderators don't have to be.

And absolutely, positively NO FUND-RAISING OR REQUESTING MONEY FOR INDIVIDUALS without the approval of a majority of community maintainers. Approval of such efforts will be rare, based on our ability to verify all the facts of the situation presented to us; more likely would be raising funds to help a UU congregation that's vandalized or has a fire. Any attempts to scam the community will result in banning from the community and, possibly, contacting the LJ abuse team.

The community is maintained by esprix and sistercoyote, and was founded by scarcrest in 2001.

And if you're eager to hear sermons preached in UU congregations around the country (and a Unitarian congregation in Ireland!), visit the Unitarian Universalist Podcast Directory for a list of more than 25 congregations that are putting their sermons online in easy-to-use podcast format: You subscribe once (for free) using iTunes or other podcast software, and new audio files will download to your computer as they're posted by the congregations.
